I’ve always loved this dish. Though, I have never actually tried to make it on my own. My kiddos haven’t tried it yet, either, so I’ve tracked down a great recipe that a friend of mine gave me to promote. She said it was her grandmother’s famous recipe so it’s a bit old-fashioned.
Who doesn’t like old-fashioned recipes, though, am I right? They always taste so much better!!

Ingredients:
- 6 golden delicious apples – peeled and chopped
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 3/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- 3/4 cup old fashioned oats
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter – diced small
- pinch kosher salt
Prep for the oven:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter an 8×8 baking dish or spray with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.
- In a mixing bowl, add chopped apples, granulated sugar, 3/4 tablespoons cinnamon and lemon juice. Stir to combine and then transfer to prepared baking dish.
- In a separate mixing bowl, add topping ingredients (brown sugar, oats, flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, salt, and diced cold butter.) Use a pastry cutter (or forks) to cut butter into the mixture, using a slight downward twisting motion, until mixture resembles pea-sized crumbs.
- Spread topping over apples in baking dish and gently pat to even it out. Bake 40-50 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
Serve hot with whipped cream or, my favorite, ice cream on top! Mmm!
Does your grandmother have any recipes that she shares with you? Ones she may not? I know my grandmothers didn’t really bake too much that I can remember. That’s probably why I don’t bake much, myself. I’d love to start, though!
Feel free to share any good recipes and let me know how you like this one!
